Radiolab: Colors

Listen to this Radiolab. It is easily one of the most interesting topics I’ve ever thought about: color. It BLOWS my mind!

Here: Colors – Radiolab.

Where is the BLUE?!

UW Design 2012

Once again, I’m blown away by the amazing design that comes from my alma mater, The University of Washington’s School of Art/Division of Design. Their recently-launched 2012 Design Show website is beautiful and seeing the students’ work motivates me to have more FUN with design. Interaction design has taken off at UW and they’re doing an incredible job.

Check out UW’s inspiring work here. And come to the Professional Night on Tuesday, June 5 from 5-8PM!

Martin/Barrett wedding

Two of my besties, Meggy and Jurd, are also getting married shortly and one of our best friends, Derek Shimizu, designed their beautiful invitations. They’re wedding is gonna be off tha heezy fo sheezy and I can’t wait!!

Derek is an amazing graphic designer and I hope these photos do them justice. I just had to share them. Nice going, D!

Kao/Mora wedding

I wanted to post a HUGE congratulations to two of my favorite friends, Goretti and André, for their upcoming marriage. One of the perks of having friends who are graphic designers is that sometimes they create beautiful stuff to send you in the mail. I recently received a gorgeous save the date from the KaoMora couple and of course I was impressed.

I love you both, Goretti and AndrĂ©! And I couldn’t be happier for you.

The HELLO Poster Show: Forces of Nature

I’m proud to be a part of the new HELLO Poster Show: Forces of Nature. The posters have been up for the past few weeks at the Cupcake Royale in Capitol Hill, Seattle. If any of you would like any of these wonderful posters in your home, go here to purchase one. There are some sexy ones!

All proceeds benefit local Seattle charities. Buy one or die. JK.

Notchless Tape Dispenser by Mamoru Yasukuni

Today I saw this tape dispenser on Daily Icon and I really want one.

“Notchless is an adhesive tape dispenser which leaves clean, straight edges without zig-zags on cut tape, simply by tearing it on the edge of a blade in the same easy way as with conventional tape dispensers. Adhesive tape without zigzags has an attractive appearance, and it does not break up when peeled as does tape cut with conventional dispensers. It thus has the advantage of not causing stickiness or dirtiness at the cut edge, increasing the utility of adhesive tape. This patented blade technology cuts adhesive tape with a straight edge in an easy and safe manner.”

Mykonos

I really love this music video of Fleet Foxes Mykonos produced by Grandchildren.

Talk about eye candy!

Jessi Arrington

How much do I love this gal? Lots. This is such an inspiring TED talk on individuality, non-conformity and positive affirmation. Each of us has an inner spirit that we need to learn how to tap into it without fear of what others might say. I love her spirit and her totally unique, positive attitude.

Check it out! She is a little doll.

Also check out what she did for her birthday. She changed colored outfits every hour and got her co-workers to do the same thing. SO FUN.

The Curious Explorers Illustrated Poster Guide to Exotic Animals

I absolutely adore this gorgeous collection of posters by Marc Martin, an illustrator and graphic designer based in Melbourne, Australia. Check out his great website here.

My personal favorite posters are the flamingo, narwhal, quetzal, the owl and of course the panda is so cute. I love animals, I love the alphabet, and I love the combination of the two. Thanks, Cassie.

Minimalist Muppets

I really enjoy this piece by Eric Slager called “Minimalist Muppets.” So fun!

Lost/Found Poster Show

I created this poster for The Hello Poster Show and it is for sale here. You don’t have to buy mine, of course, but all of the proceeds will benefit Youth in Focus, a Seattle-based photography program that aims to “empower urban teens, through photography, to experience their world in new ways and make positive changes in their lives.”

So why not help out kids with a beautiful rainbow poster? I guess I could just give you one for free if you do something really nice for me, like scratch my head.

I am Love

After a lovely dinner the other night with two of the sexiest ladies I know, I was reminded of this amazing movie. Tilda Swinton was amazing in this stunning film and I am Love happens to have one of my favorite movie posters of all time.

Gorgeous!

Mushroom Lamps

I want these lamps!! They are Fungi Lamps, by Andreas Kowalewski. I’m sure they’re totally affordable.

Waiting For ‘Superman’: Trailer

The people over at BUCK created this excellent infographic as a trailer to the new documentary Waiting for ‘Superman’ which was released in theaters a few weeks ago.

Check it out!

Annabelle Gould

Last night I attended a lecture and exhibition by Annabelle Gould, a UW Visual Communication Design faculty member and designer. Annabelle was also my MFA thesis advisor while I was at UW and I admire her teaching philosophy, her design, and the overall person that she is. She’s an extremely talented publication and web designer with a knack for the design details that make her work so solid.

As an educator Annabelle encourages students to experiment and discover with a variety of design tools. This results in different design executions, which is unique for many school environments. Many students try to solve design problems like a singular mathematical equation that their professor will say is correct or incorrect. Annabelle doesn’t allow students to think this way which is very refreshing. I wish everyone could take a class from her.

Check out her work here. And the UW design program here.

David McCandless

Here’s a fascinating TED talk called “The Beauty of Data Visualization” by David McCandless. It is an intuitive look into why designers need to create information design that draws a complete picture. It is also a testament to the power of accurate, beautiful information design.

He says, “It feels like we have a lot of information problems in our society at the moment, from the overload and the saturation to the breakdown of trust and reliability, runaway skepticism, lack of transparency, or even just interestingness… Visualizing information can give us a very quick solution to those kind of problems… Often we can get clarity or the answer to a simple question, very quickly.”

Here is the Left vs. Right diagram that he mentions in the talk:

UW Design 2010

Last night I attended the 2010 University of Washington Design Exhibition and just as I expected, it was very impressive. It was also so fun to see old friends, classmates, and faculty members that made my time there so memorable.

The show goes on until June 19th, so go check it out. Click here for more information. I particularly enjoyed some of the projects by Josh, Kimberly, Ronald, Stephanie, and Tanya. Here are a few:

Amazing COLORS

I am probably one of COLORS magazine’s biggest fans. Last night a few of us got online to try this out and it really is incredible. Basically you hold up certain spreads of the magazine to your webcam and then it will show you a video of what the spread is about.

I’ve always been blown away with how COLORS is able to connect people all over the world to each other while highlighting stories of what makes us different and what makes us the same. I’m now blown away with their ability to combine print and web mediums to create a truly unique interactive experience. I’m kind of freaking out about it.

8th Continent Soymilk

I wanted to give a personal shout out for the wonderful rebranding of 8th Continent Soymilk, particularly because of the lovely illustrations by Ben Javens. I’m normally not a huge fan of Futura, but it looks great here. I seriously might start drinking more soy milk because of this!

GOOD 019: The Neighborhoods Issue

I really love the new issue of GOOD, where they asked designers, artists, and illustrators to design flags celebrating their neighborhood. I think the sausage one in the top left corner is my favorite. It was made by Playlab for Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. I also love the one shown in the lower right corner by Kevin Will Chen for Nederland, Texas. Kind of fun. There are lots more to see if you go here.

The Secret Project project

My beautiful and talented friend, Kate, has a project for you! Click on the image below to find out what it is. And then go and do it!

Edward Tufte

I was excited to hear the announcement that Obama appointed Edward Tufte, the designer and creator of some of the most thought-provoking books on information design, to serve on the Recovery Independent Advisory Panel! I will definitely be looking forward to seeing what he does.
