PAALS

I recently came across this organization that I find extremely inspiring. PAALS for Life is an organization that focuses on helping the people and animals who are thrown away by society. The woman in the following video operates two ranches in Douglas County, Colorado and Union County, New Mexico, and the purpose of her organization is to provide sanctuary, therapy, and comfort to the unwanted, homeless, and disabled whether or not they have “paws, hooves, claws, or fingers”.

Diane Benedict is officially one of my favorite people in the world. Thanks for doing what you do, Diane. The whole concept makes touches my heart in the sincerest way possible.

Megan & Jared Barrett Wedding

On July 21, 2012, I married Megan and Jared Barrett. I love saying that because it sounds like I became their spouse. Rather, I officiated their wedding and I often look back on their amazing day with a heart full of love and appreciation. Megan and Jared radiate happiness and I can’t imagine more perfect partners. I’m honored to be their friend.

My BFF, Julia, created a gorgeous video of the evening and it can be seen below. Julia’s talent cannot be measured; she’s a powerhouse.

Halloween Boo Ha Ha 2012

I wanted to post about the amazing Halloween Party we had this year at The House of Blood and Guts, commonly known as The House of Love and Friendship. I had a wonderful time and the turnout blew me away.

The spook alley was scarier than it’s ever been thanks to Brian Paquette and his huge roll of black sheeting that will definitely be used over and over. I LOVED hiding, waiting, and then scaring each person as they arrived, though a few girls were too anxious for me to scare. I felt bad.

Easily, the biggest highlight of the night was Glitterbang. They’re the perfect band to play a house party and their music was too fun. It made me so happy and it still does. I’m smiling now just thinking about how much I loved them.

Everyone’s costumes cracked me up and were all over the map: Adventuretime’s Ice King, Michael Kors, Tim Gunn, Sigourney Weaver, Mary Poppins and Bert, The Care Bears (and the Care Bear Stare), The Space Needle, two swan-dressed Björks, four Robin Hoods, two Wilfreds, and The Addams Fambibly, honk honk. (We honk instead of snap.)

Thank you everyone who helped out, mostly with set-up, food and decorations: Julia, Angela, Brian, Sarah, Dan, Jordan, Josh, Trevor, Christy, Taylor and everyone else! Thanks especially to Joey Veneziani and Nicki Danger, aka Glitterbang. They are THE BEST and it wouldn’t have worked without them. This party really is one of the highlights of my year and this year was definitely a night to remember, barf nougats and all.

See you next year! I honestly can’t wait!

Alive Inside

This is a trailer for a documentary called Alive Inside and it is touching.

I love it.

“Right Down The Line”

I love Bonnie Raitt, and I love her even more after this adorable video for “Right Down The Line” from her new album. Bonnie’s voice hasn’t aged a bit and she looks amazing.

Check out the cute video directed by Steven Lippman aka FLIP. And thank you Mr. Lackey for showing this to me.

My Birthdee

One thing I secretly love (now not so secretly) about Facebook is that so many people come out of the woodworks to wish you a Happy Birthday: people you met in a bar 4 years ago, your friends’ parents, old co-workers that you never see anymore, second cousins, etc. I love it. Thanks to everyone who sent their warm wishes.

This year’s birthdee proved to be one of the best ever. After an amazing brunch complete with bacon, German pancakes, Jared’s amazing breakfast sandwich secret ingredient (maple syrup), homemade bloody mary mix, a birthday banner station, tons of treasures, mimosa explosions, and a spanking machine, we went to quiet dinner with our roommate Chris.

While at dinner, Taylor arranged for a group of my friends to arrive with streamers, balloons, pots and pans, and kazoos and surprise me with my very own Winnie the Pooh parade. It was one of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received. Thank you to my wonderful friends, Taylor, and everyone who showed up to brunch for making my birthday so amazing. You each make my life so meaningful and I love you all so much.

I wanted to document what was perhaps the cutest moment of the day. My friends, Royal and Danielle, have the most adorable son, Issac, and this was one of our adorable interactions:

Isaac: “Hey Jason, do you have a mommy?”
Me: “Yes, but she died a little while a go.”
Isaac: “Why?”
Me: “Well, she got kind of sick and wasn’t feeling very good.”
Isaac: “Oh…”
I start to walk away to check on the bacon.
Isaac: “Hey, Jason! What was your mommy’s name?”
Me: “Aww.. It was Sharon.”
Isaac leaves with his parents and they drive home.
Isaac says to Danielle: “I’m sad Jason’s mommy died, because I wanted to see how pretty she is.”

Isn’t that so cute? Gosh, I love that little stinker!

Here’s Isaac modeling his Bea-Day shirt.

School Portrait

I came across School Portrait on accident and I’m so glad I did. I thought it was going to be an annoying public service announcement on everything wrong with our world. Instead it made me feel really good.

Just watch it.

Mongolia!

I just randomly came across this cute clip of children in Mongolia looking at Polaroids of themselves. It made me smile big.

Megan & Jurd

Two of my favorite people in the world, Megan and Jared, will be getting married a year from today! Since the traditional 1-year wedding anniversary gift is paper I thought it’d be fun to brainstorm some -1-year gift ideas. But it has to be worse than paper.

1. Wicker Furniture
2. Lane Bryant giftcard
3. Cigarettes
4. Vibram FiveFingers shoes
5. Diarrhea
6. Jäger
7. Fingernails
8. CrossFit subscription
9. PC laptop
10. Sheer underwear

what else?

I love Megan and Jurd as though they were my family. They are two of the most genuine, loving, wonderful people I know. Megan is so wise and wonderful to talk to. She’s one of my closest friends and I hope she always will be. Jurd is a lucky feller, and he is her match in every way I can imagine. I love him like a brother and I couldn’t be happier for Megan that she’s found such a hunka quality man.

I love you guys!

How cute are they?

Cui Li

A few weeks ago, The House of Love and Friendship (the boys and I) had the unexpected pleasure of having a very special guest from Chongqing, China. Cui Li and I met at my mom’s funeral last October and she actually lived with my mom and dad for quite a while. She worked with the Chinese immersion program that Utah has implemented in some schools and has now decided to go home to Chongqing since “Utah is so boring.”

Before going home, Cui Li planned an Alaskan cruise with her friend. She encountered visa problems while trying to board and they forbade her to go on the trip since they would pass through Victoria, BC. She was pretty bummed but Taylor and I decided to have her spend the week with us. The awful people at Royal Caribbean treated her like crap and didn’t refund her money: one more reason I hate cruises. It turned out the cruise was full of old people who go to bed at 6 PM and her friend said it wasn’t fun at all. Cui Li, on the other hand, made the most of her stay in Seattle and I’m pretty happy that we were able to show her such a good time.

The night before she left, she decided to thank us with a traditional Chinese meal. We visited many Asian markets and she cooked all day. The food tasted better than any Chinese food I’ve ever had. Cui Li even demonstrated how to eat chicken feet, saying they are a common snack for girls to eat at the movies, which made me laugh tons.

I wanted to attach some pics of the delicious food and to publicly declare my love for Cui Li. She was one of our best guests ever! Even Alfie (my dog) loved her!

Now I can’t wait to go visit her in Chongqing and eat chicken feet at the movies! (Though she says boys don’t eat them very often, unless they’re drinking beer.) Sign me up!

Here is Cui Li cooking up a storm!

My favorite: Sautéed green peppers with egg-white marinated chicken.

Second favorite: BBQ pork ribs. I ate so many!

Third favorite: Cui Li’s famous spicy chicken legs.

Last favorite: Chicken feet. They actually tasted good. Taylor and I just couldn’t stop thinking about Gertie and Flo, our chickens.

Second to last favorite: Jacob’s taint. JK, it’s my favorite.

Adieu Jacob

My bestie, Jacob, recently left Seattle for equally green pastures in Great Barrington, MA. Obviously, I’m sad and I miss him so much, but I’m also very happy for him and his new life, his new car, his new swimming pool. Must be hard.

Jacob recently got an amazing gig as an adjunct professor of art at Bard College at Simon’s Rock. See more of Jacob’s work and listen to his sweet tracks here. I love Jacob’s work and I know he’s going to do well there; I’m just sad that he’s on the other side of the continent.

I love you, Jacob! Can’t wait to see you again sometime soon!

Lummi Island 2011

I recently spent some time with some of my favorite people (and dogs) on the heavenly Lummi Island. Rachel, Andreea, and Annabelle have a lovely home on the west-facing part of the island and invited me, Taylor, Chris, Alfie and Sarah Bowen to spend a weekend with them. Lummi Island reminds me of those epic film scores like Legends of the Fall, The Lord of the Rings or The Last of the Mohicans. You can’t help but feel that you’re in a larger-than-life place and everything you look at is perfect. To be there with some of the most amazing people (and dogs) on the planet, makes me want to cry.

Thank you Rachel, Andreea and Annabelle for an unforgettable weekend! Whenever I’m stuck at work or in traffic, I simply close my eyes and picture myself drinking one of Sarah’s grapefruit contraptions, sitting on your amazing porch, looking for whales, eating Andreea’s scallops, playing The Best Game Ever, and suddenly everything is okay again.

I love you!

Louis

I’ve been seeing posters everywhere for this poor lost puppy and have been dying to find out if anything has happened. Well, my friend Julia told me just moments ago that they found him!! They posted an update here and it makes me so happy I could cry:

“HUGE thank you goes out to CHS and the Capitol Hill community. Louis was found yesterday evening!

A homeless man called us around 5:30pm saying that he thinks he found Lou. We were skeptical because we’ve received several scammers and false sightings, but we had to follow up on every lead, no matter how far-fetched it sounded. The man was sincere and straightforward, and he led us to a wooded area along I-5 near Dearborn. We hiked up a steep embankment, and he pointed our a dog under a tree on a woolen shelter blanket. We immediately knew it was Louis from the white stripe along his neck, but he was so weak that he could barely muster enough energy to get up to meet us.

He immediately went limp in our arms like a ragdoll, and we rushed to the emergency vet. He lost about 30% of his body weight and looks like a sheet was thrown over an anatomical skeleton. He has a bunch of scrapes and scarring along his forehead, legs, and shoulders, and an eye infection. Prognosis is good, though—slowly reintroduce him to food and water, and some antibiotics for the eye. He should have a full recovery and slowly grow some hair back.

The man who called us about finding Lou was so kind and helpful. He wasn’t reward motivated, and when we gave him a generously appropriate gift, he, too, was over the moon. We were happy to give him a little something to help out his life which is full of hardship.

Thank you all for your help in spreading the word and keeping an eye out for our little buddy. We are overwhelmingly happy and are so grateful for the outpouring of support from strangers, friends, and family alike. Thank you again.

RE: Posters: We’re doing the responsible thing and working on taking them down. It is slow, and we apologize as it will take us some time to fully sweep the city. It took us three weeks and a team of friends and family to put them up. Thank you to all who have volunteered to grab some down while you’re out and about in your daily lives–we appreciate you alleviating our clean-up process!!!

With our deepest thanks and appreciation,
Mike and Kendall”

Where’s my pillow? :’( So cute!

Sequim 2011

I discovered the best way to recharge my batteries is to visit the Olympic Peninsula and just sit close to the water and watch the world happen. As I mentioned in my last post, I spent last weekend in Sequim (pronounced Squim) and I had an amazing time. It only takes 2 hours to get there from Seattle and I will definitely return.

Here are a few fun pics from the weekend:

UGG Prints

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who made my birthday so amazing. All of the text messages, phone calls, emails, cards, Facebook comments and comments here on my blog were really touching and I can honestly say “I love you guys” and I truly mean it. This week has been a tough one for me in a lot of ways and I owe so much of my happiness and sanity to the people who listen to me, who love me, and who call me their friend. You know who you are. Thanks.

To show my gratitude, I wrote a poem. A poem I call UGG Prints.

UGG Prints
by Jason Campbell

One night I totally dreamed I was walking in the mall with my BFF, Jacie.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the retractable glass ceiling.

In each scene I noticed tons of UGG boots footprints. Sometimes there were two sets of UGG boots footprints, other times there were only one set of UGG boots footprints.

This totes bugged. And I was all, when my shopping bags were way heavy from the MAC sale and the Macy’s sale and stuff, there was only one set of UGG boots footprints. So I was all, “Hey Jacie, WTF? When I was sad and tired and stuff you totes bailed!”

Then Jacie was like, “The times when you only saw one sets of UGG boots footprints I was in Nordies buying more UGG boots, but I totally caught up with you, betch!”

And I was all, “Whatever!”

If any of you would like a signed copy of UGG Prints written in Zapfino on fuzzy, mall-art background, just send a request to my email, along with a mailing address. And it’s free!

How to Be Alone

I just needed a reminder:

The Best Three Weeks of Our Lives, Part VI

Tomorrow, Celeste Cooning will kick off The Best Three Weeks of Our Lives, Part VI and I can’t believe it’s already been six years since it began!

For those of you who don’t know, TB3WOOL began 6 years ago when I met Cebestie and Andreally Pretty in our respective graduate programs at the University of Washington. We soon realized we were all born in 1978 within three weeks of each other and the rest is history. Of course we celebrate our birthdays normally, but TB3WOOL is a great way for us to acknowledge our friendship and our genuine love for each other. It is also a perfect excuse to go effing nuts.

Fruncle Jason

I’m very excited to announce that I’m going to be a fruncle! You know, a friend-uncle. My good friends, Nicole and Stoker, are welcoming a baby person in June of 2011. I love babies and this news makes me so excited! I know their child will inherit a great sense of family, love, music-taste, loyalty, and friendship.

Huge congratulations to Stoker and Nicole! I love you and your future peanut.

I think it looks more like Nicole: all black inside. What do you think? ;)

Kate and Nick

Just wanted to take a moment to say how amazing this last Saturday was. My friends, Kate and Nick, got married and it was easily one of the most special and fun weddings that I’ve ever been to. Kate was simply stunning. Nick was so gracious and handsome. The ceremony was so special and unique. Dinner was delicious. The venue, Herban Feast, was gorgeous. The photobooth by Sarah Rhoads was a monstrous hit. We all got succulent succulents to take home. And I haven’t been that sweaty from dancing in a long, long time.

Congratulations, Kate and Nick. You are two of the most beautiful, amazing, kind, thoughtful, and creative people that I’ve ever met. Sending you all the love in the world and wishing you the best on your honeymoon and forever and ever! I’m so glad I got to celebrate your special day with you!!

I love you!

Mom Report #2

Today I returned to Seattle from a second visit to Utah and I thought I’d share the latest about what’s happening with my momma, since a lot of people have asked about her.

After my mom was released from the hospital a few weeks ago, she suffered a second heart attack that was brought on by her head injury. (The head injury required they take her off of blood-thinners which caused the previous stents to fail.) Well this time around it was much more serious and it was one of the scariest moments in my life. She returned to the hospital’s ICU and was extremely sick with pneumonia and extremely tired. She recently told me that she thought she was going to die and that she had been ready to go.

Some family and friends decided to have a fast, which is a religious ritual where one gives up food for decided amount of time and then devotes thoughts and prayers for a specific cause, in this case my mom. I truly believe in the positive reinforcement that this fasting gave my mom, and the comfort it gave those of us who did it, knowing that we were all united in a single effort. And by the next morning, my mom was perkier, using the bathroom more, and eating better.

A few days after that, she was released from the hospital and is now home recovering. She is attended by my amazing Aunt Sue and receives regular visits from a nurse and physical therapist. Her heart is still in poor shape but she is doing much better and will likely be well enough for medical repairs in a few weeks. She may or may not return to 100% heart capacity, but we’ll settle for a solid 70%.

This last visit’s duties consisted of me rubbing her feet, washing and blow drying her hair, baking her cookies, doing leg exercises with her and tucking her in at night. I immensely enjoyed bonding with her and my Aunt Sue as they told me stories about growing up in Fresno; stories that I have to share later. I love my mom a lot and am glad that these moments are still around to be enjoyed.

Thanks for asking, everyone!

Christina and Jillian

I just had to give a HUGE shout out to two of my favorite people, Jillian & Christina, for getting engaged a few days ago. Christina told me that she was going to propose in December, but she just couldn’t wait. It makes me all teary-eyed but lately I’m just kind of always that way.

Congratulations you two! I love you both so much and am so happy that you’ve found each other!

I love this pic, btw:
