Latrice Royale

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love RuPaul’s Drag Race. This show is hysterical, campy, cheesy, dramatic, abrasive, empowering, and everything good that has to do with television.

If you have been keeping up with the show, you can imagine my disappointment when Latrice Royale, one of the most amazing drag queens ever, got kicked off. I admit that she wasn’t at her best in this week’s episode, but she should have taken Phi Phi O’boring’s spot in the top three. Don’t get me started oh Phi Phi. She is horrible. (Absolut vodka sponsors the show, and if Phi Phi wins please switch to Ketel One, Grey Goose, or even Smirnoff for all I care.)

I’m totally in love with the other two top-three queens, Sharon Needles and Chad Michaels. I’m hoping for Sharon Needles to win, but a Chad Michaels win would be totally welcome. I’m equally obsessed with Chad Sell’s amazing illustrations which you can see here. He accurately focuses the majority of his work on Sharon, Chad, and Latrice since they are the best, but there are a few other fun ones. (See Dida Ritz!)

I’m pretty bummed that Latrice is out but I’m sure she won’t be going anywhere but up from here. She won over anyone who heard her laugh, speak, or lip-sync for her life. I love her! Check out these great illustrations in honor of Latrice:

“Right Down The Line”

I love Bonnie Raitt, and I love her even more after this adorable video for “Right Down The Line” from her new album. Bonnie’s voice hasn’t aged a bit and she looks amazing.

Check out the cute video directed by Steven Lippman aka FLIP. And thank you Mr. Lackey for showing this to me.

Luther

I just finished watching the first season of BBC’s Luther and it got me so riled up that I had to watch happy shows in order to go to sleep. The six-episode first season of this show thrilled and chilled me to the bone, and I can’t wait to watch the second.

The story follows John Luther, played by dreamboat Idris Elba, who is an extremely skilled and passionate homicide detective in London. He befriends a serial killer in a sort of Hannibal Lector/Clarice Starling kind of way and they constantly toy with each others minds. Unable to provide evidence of this person’s guilt, he constantly struggles with when to accept her friendship and when to push her away.

This show is intense and extremely addictive. There are huge twists and turns around every corner, with many “nuh uh!” moments. I can’t recommend this show enough.

“A Real Hero”

Drive was my favorite film from 2011, and even though I’ve heard this song (“A Real Hero” by College feat. Electric Youth) a thousand times I can’t stop listening to it.

This is the only video of the song I could find that wasn’t stock photography. Just listen, if you’d like.

Lummi Island 2012

Once again I spent a wonderful weekend in Lummi Island with a group of my favorite people and doggies. Alfie and Annabelle got along swimmingly. Phew. I truly enjoyed Jonathan’s homemade chilaquiles and Andreea’s amazing sausage pasta. Mystic Pizza made the sun come out, I just know it.

Thank you Rachel, Andreea and Annabelle for hosting us boys. We always love our times in Lummi and can’t wait until we can come again.

Take Shelter

Last night I watched Jeff Nichols’ 2011 suspense Take Shelter and it blew me away. Michael Shannon gave a tremendous performance as a small town man named Curtis who is plagued by dreams of eminent danger to himself and his family. Jessica Chastain plays his wife who struggles to adapt to Curtis’ gradually declining sanity. I can’t say enough about how much I love her.

This movie feels like a modern version of Noah’s ark from the Bible. Curtis often appears insane and everyone around him certainly thinks so. But as the viewer you really want to believe him and you’re often uncertain if you should. I of course won’t ruin the ending, but I have to express my love of the final scene. It’s definitely a cliffhanger, but it is so beautiful.

Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon appear to have a really good thing going a la Neil LaBute and Aaron Eckhart. They worked together in a the well-received Shotgun Stories and will also collaborate in 2013′s Mud. Keep an eye out, and check out Take Shelter; it’s one of the best of 2011.
